Dermal fillers like Restylane and Botox are the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the world. They are FDA approved and used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds on the skin.
What is Botox?
Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment. More than 6 million people have Botox treatments performed every year.
Botox is a neurotoxin used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It does this by paralyzing the muscled under the skin, causing them to relax and the skin above them to un-wrinkle. It can also be used to treat excessive sweating, headaches, migraines, and some muscle and organ disorders.
When treating fine lines and wrinkles, it is administered via injection.
What is Restylane?
Restylane is a dermal filler made from “non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid” or NASHA, for short. Similar to Botox, Restylane is injected at a mid-to-deep level and used for correction of moderate to deep facial wrinkles and folds.
Restylane works by attracting and binding itself to water molecules. This causes a volumizing effect in the dermal tissue. Over time, Restylane is degraded by the body’s natural mechanisms. It will disappear without any left-over residue. If you want to maintain the look, you will have to “refresh” approximately once every 6 months.
Nasolabial folds are an example of folds treated by Restylane.
Restylane is also used as a lip filler due to its volumizing aspect. Many patients come to our offices in Chicago with the hope of being able to even out their lips or plump them up. In the case study below, you will see a patient who accomplished that.
Difference between Botox and Restylane
So, the difference between Botox and Restylane is the way they work. Botox relaxes the muscles under the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Restylane volumizes from under the skin, also reducing wrinkles, but in the opposite way.
Restylane Case Study
One of our beautiful patients wanted to even out her lips because the right upper and lower lips were a bit smaller on one side than the other. Restylane as a lip filler is perfect for this because it adds volume. Restylane was injected on the right upper and lower lips to help even them out.

Face fillers and Botox Case Study
Botox was used for the forehead, frown line, and brows for a brow lift. The patient also had Restylane-L to the nasolabial folds and lips. Restylane Defyne ((0.8cc) was used for the midface and temples.

By combining both Botox and Restylane treatments, Chicago Cosmetic Institute was able to help Kasia bring symmetry to her lips, lift her brow, and reduce the appearance of frown lines and nasolabial folds.
Sometimes the best treatment combines different dermal fillers to perform multiple tasks.
