Breast asymmetry is a term to describe the imbalance we have in the size of our breasts. Breast implants, reductions, and lifts all result with more symmetrical breasts. Symmetry is desirable in all things, but that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with asymmetry!

In this post, we are going to delve a bit deeper in the science behind asymmetry, what it means, what it doesn’t, and what can be done about it if you do wish to go with a more symmetrical look.

But why are breasts not symmetrical in the first place?

Allow us to break it down for you a bit and let you know the different solutions we offer to help you bring your breasts to a positioning that you feel more confident and beautiful with.

The Science Behind Breast Asymmetry

Let us start at the beginning here. This may be good news to many of you out there. NOBODY has perfectly symmetrical breasts (or anything else, for that matter). Everyone in the world has some level of variation in their breasts.

“Normal anatomical development in the fetal stage leads to some level of asymmetry,” explains Dr. Karol A. Gutowski of Chicago Cosmetic Institute. “It is totally normal for your body to be asymmetrical.”

Most asymmetry is due to a difference in volume of tissue in the breast area, skin elasticity, or some other factor that is completely natural and shouldn’t be worried about.

There are, of course, diseases that can cause this to be more noticeable in some people. Diseases like Poland Syndrome, for example, which causes a lack of pectoral tissue on one side of the body. These can make the need for corrective breast surgery more necessary to achieve a more symmetrical look for the breasts.

Nipples can also vary in appearance!

Just like the breasts, and the rest of the human anatomy, the nipples can also vary slightly from one another. One of your nipples might be larger, darker, inverted, etc. This is nothing to worry or feel self-conscious about. It is totally normal. Your body is beautiful the way it is!

If the difference is very noticeable and affecting you, there are options to correct your breast symmetry.

Regardless of how natural it is for the breasts to show variation, some still are bothered by the way it makes them look or feel. It can sometimes make wearing certain bras or clothing more difficult. If your breast asymmetry is affecting the way you perceive yourself and the confidence you have in human interactions, you should have it corrected.

Plastic surgery options for more symmetrical breasts

The surgical procedure you need to correct your breast symmetry depends on the size, degree of asymmetry, and desired size and appearance of your breasts post-op. You have the option to augment the smaller breast, reduce the larger breast, augment both sides, or reduce both breasts. Speaking to a surgeon is always going to be the best way to go about finding your best options.

We will go over some of the common choices for breast augmentation with symmetry in mind.

Breast Reduction

If you have large breasts, you have the option for a reduction to bring them both to a more symmetrical state. Breast reduction will reduce the size of your breasts by a couple of cup sizes or more depending on your desired look. At the same time, symmetry will be achieved. Nipples can also be repositioned as needed if they are also uneven.

Fat Transfer

If one of your breasts is significantly larger than the other, fat transfer is an option. Similar to the way a Brazilian Butt Lift is done for the rear end, fatty tissue can be removed from one breast and added to the other to achieve symmetry. This a more “natural” feel for some women who are not fans of the idea of breast implants.

Breast Implants

The most common of all breast procedures, breast implants are always a good option for increasing the size, as well as the symmetry of the breasts. For those worried about losing the natural feel, there have been many advancements in breast implants since their inception. They could be worth checking into for you. Perhaps we will publish another post in the future on the different implant options.
